This is a very old mussel shell that buttons have been cut from. I found it along the Ohio River where an old shell button factory once was. The factory produced buttons from the local shell materials of the Ohio River in the late 1800’s. This is a nice example with all holes still visible and round. The shell measures approximately 4 3/4" x 3 1/4" and has had 4 holes cut thru it. The holes are about 5/8" diameter and some over-lap. The Mother-of-pearl on the inside has a nice shine. I am selling this unusual button blank shell with 10 genuine vintage shell buttons ( which are not cut from this particular shell !). The buttons are all old however.   The mother-of-pearl shell buttons range in size from 1" to 3/8".  Together the pair of mother of pearl buttons and the button shell blank make a nice little collection. It shows the life of a shell button from start…to finish.
