    Description

Wm STRACHAN SHERRY LEITH ( the port side of Edinburgh, Scotland ) 1890 - 1925 ( dates are our estimate )
Glass wine bottles were 'sealed' by placing a molten blob of glass ( later, sealing wax ) on the shoulder of a bottle and impressing it with a metal engraved matrix ( depicted as a mirror image / the design being incuse or cut into the metal ), thus indicating what product it contained. The process was started in the mid 1600's and carried on until the early 1900's. The impression made ( on bottles ) are routinely found at archaeological sites, but the matrix is rare; after all, a single matrix could be used for a large number of bottles, casks, stationery etc.
This seal is about an inch ( 2.25 centimeters ) in diameter and is attached to a wood handle ( similar to that shown in the picture ), standing approximately 4 inches ( 10 centimeters ) high.
