    Description

    World War II Era Hand Crafted War Club from the Solomon Islands Carved from Native Hardwood (See the ink inscriptions on club highlighted below.)
    Circa: 1910 - 1940
    15 1/4 inches (39 cm) long x 4 1/2 inches (11.4 cm) wide x 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) deep
    Condition; Very good: The club has natural ethnographic wear and patination.
    Description: This rugged older hand weapon is typical of the Solomon Islands and was collected during World War II. There are four ink inscriptions on each face of the handle which did not clearly show up in the photos.

    . There was no direct history about this object. However a good guess is that it was mailed home from the Solomon Islands during World War II. (As specific location information was probably prohibited while the war raged on). Fighting continued in the Solomons until the end of the War. I have seen a number of these sturdy smaller clubs and there seems to be no consensus as to their use. (i.e. training, dance, ceremonial, or for children or a model.)  However I think that they would have been an effective close combat weapon in a society that lacked a supply of iron or bronze.
    This item was from a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania estate. There were two similar items in that collection.
